Jonathan started the race with a sizeable breakaway.
Of course, his intention wasn't to hold of the field for the
entire 40 minutes of racing. Instead, he went out in front
to "warm up" his legs.
Here's a good demonstration on proper cornering
techniques.
Some people actually did try for breakaways, but none
were allowed.
A picture of the pack along the start/finish line
straightaway.
Both Jonathan and Thomas had excellent position every
lap, and seemed comfortable sitting in and waiting for the last
few laps.
Here, fellow racer and friend Mark Tyma struggles to
regain the tail end of the pack. Unfortunately the
gap spread to far and there isn't much one rider can do
against 25.
Riders spread out single file is a tell-tale sign that
the field is really putting the hammer down and working hard.
Riders then get one behind the other to minimize work.
Here Jonathan moves up in position preparing for the
final lap.
Success! The finish line is only 100 meters away,
and although the 2nd and 3rd place finishers close that gap
considerably, they never come close to Jonathan's first place
victory.
The victory lap (ie. cool down time) with Jonathan and
Thomas behind him. Thomas did well staying with the group
but just didn't have the legs for the final sprint. Last
year Thomas finished 3rd in this race.
